I've read that Spanish colonists in the Americas required native slaves to keep a gold coin on a string around their necks. Any slave found without a gold coin would be killed on the spot. Which brings us to a discussion about the lengths that people will go to, the degradations they will willfully if not enthusiastically visit upon themselves, just to get by.
