When I was DJing, playing Can, Liquid Liquid, ESG, all that kind of stuff, I became kind of cool for a moment, which was a total anomaly. And when I heard other DJs playing similar music I was like: ‘Fuck! I’m out of a job! These are my records!’ But it was like someone had crept into my brain and said all these words that I hate. Did I make the records? Did I fuck! So, I started becoming horrified by my own attitude. I had this moment of glory though. People would use me to DJ just to get them cool. They’d be like ‘It’s the cool rock disco guy’ and this was really weird. And to be honest I was afraid that this new found coolness was going to go away and that’s where ‘Losing My Edge’ comes from. It is about being horrified by my own silliness. And then it became a wider thing about people who grip onto other people’s creations like they are their own. There is a lot of pathos in that character though because it’s born out of inadequacy and love.

Funny thing to be cool for not. Anyways, glad thats all over with. I'll be too old for the next shift in music anyways.

Here is his latest quote from an NYT article on the recent decision to begin installing turnstiles on the LA subway:

“Unfortunately, as L.A. gets to be more urban, it has these breakdowns of trust that happen in big cities,” said Joel Kotkin, a Los Angeles resident and author of “The City: A Global History.” “It’s the flip side of all the good things.”

Sure buddy. Because relying on random ticket inspections is a sign that you blindly trust your patrons to pay. Because LA used to be a really small city before they built the subway, you know, in the 1980's.

I'm sure old Joel fondly remembers the county fair where you could just walk on the rides without showing your ticket. Or maybe he's talking about the toll booths on his favorite freeways that just ask for donations? No no no... I've got it, back before the subway made L.A. all "urban", Joey would just stroll down the interstate to his favorite local bar, walk behind the counter and pour himself a double, then slap a fiver on the counter on his way out. Those were the good old days, I can't wait for all these morons to start dying.

Consider the source: the NYT loves to run stories about sunny California cities crossing over to the dark side that wisened New Yorkers know so so well. Regardless, Mr. Randal C. Archibald, author of the story, should reconsider his sources, and not allow this WSJ hack another soap box.

The Fire Department's investigation into allegations that a drunken off-duty firefighter groped one female volunteer and exposed himself to another at a soup kitchen run by nuns appears to be sinking in the proverbial San Francisco quicksand.
Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White has said getting to the bottom of what happened during an Aug. 29 barbecue outside the soup kitchen by 30 off-duty firefighters is a "top priority."
Dozens of firefighters from stations in Noe Valley and the Bayview have been brought in for questioning about what happened after the partyers returned from an afternoon Giants game to the soup kitchen building on Third Street, which is also used by the firefighters union's Toys for Tots program.
Although there has been no official complaint, the cops are also looking into the incident.
Even Mayor Gavin Newsom has gotten involved, listening to the tape of the 911 call that day from one of the nuns with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity.
"I've been down myself and talked with the nuns," Hayes-White said. "They confirmed that something happened, but for whatever reason, the two women don't want to press the case at this time."
Sources close to the case tell us Fire Department investigators have zeroed in on one or two firefighters. But without positive IDs, getting any further will be difficult.
Added twist: One of the targets of the investigation let it be known that he wasn't going to take the fall and that the real culprit had three days to come forward, or else.
At that point, the guy who may have done the groping did what everyone seems to do in these situations.

The Dollar Auction

Economics professors have a standard game they use to demonstrate how apparently rational decisions can create a disastrous result. They call it a "dollar auction." The rules are simple. The professor offers a dollar for sale to the highest bidder, with only one wrinkle: the second-highest bidder has to pay up on their losing bid as well. Several students almost always get sucked in. The first bids a penny, looking to make 99 cents. The second bids 2 cents, the third 3 cents, and so on, each feeling they have a chance at something good on the cheap. The early stages are fun, and the bidders wonder what possessed the professor to be willing to lose some money.

The problem surfaces when the bidders get up close to a dollar. After 99 cents the last vestige of profitability disappears, but the bidding continues between the two highest players. They now realize that they stand to lose no matter what, but that they can still buffer their losses by winning the dollar. They just have to outlast the other player. Following this strategy, the two hapless students usually run the bid up several dollars, turning the apparent shot at easy money into a ghastly battle of spiraling disaster.

I know one person that regularly uses a computer and who does not use a Mac - one that's it. Granted I'm not exactly Kevin Bacon here, but I do keep in semi-regular contact with a fair number of people.

When is the last time you used a program on Windows that truly blew you away? It seems like there is a storm of new development on the Mac, and they are coming out with all sorts of exciting things - Quicksilver, the various Omni products, Apple's ever improving suite of products, MarsEdit 2.0...
